About
Hilma af Klint and August Strindberg were both esotericists, but what is esotericism? During the latter part of the 19th century, so-called esoteric trends became established in European cultural and intellectual circles, not least in Sweden. Secret teachings, rites, and practices include alchemy, astrology, occultism, and theosophy, in which belief in a corresponding cosmos, a living nature, and transmutational experiences predominate. But esotericism stretches much further back in Swedish history. Although the church has long designated the esoteric currents of ideas as heresy and operated secretly, they have significantly influenced Swedish culture.
In this anthology, we bring together some of Sweden’s leading experts in the field to explore the history of esotericism in Sweden and how its rites, practices, and traditions came to influence writers and artists such as August Strindberg, Selma Lagerlöf, Viktor Rydberg, Hilma af Klint, Tyra Kleen and Carl Milles.
